sassi-di-matera-10-april-2016-1

Matera and its cave dwellings, in the Basilicata province of Italy, is mentioned as the third oldest site in the world with a continuous human population. Preceded only by Jericho and Aleppo, the Sassi di Matera was an ancient place already in Roman times; the story goes. It is stunning in whole, as well as in the myriad of details carved out and applied to  rocks and walls over hundreds and thousands of years. And in the everyday life still going about among alleys and houses.
