Matera and its cave dwellings, in the Basilicata province of Italy, is mentioned as the third oldest site in the world with a continuous human population. Preceded only by Jericho and Aleppo, the Sassi di Matera was an ancient place already in Roman times; the story goes. It is stunning in whole, as well as in the myriad of details carved out and applied to rocks and walls over hundreds and thousands of years.
